GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

*knock knock knock* Hello? This thing on? Yes? Okay! This is the Jackrabbit Speaks, your official email about Burning Man stuff! Everything is totally normal around here, and there's nothing different or weird about this issue of the JRS, especially in the writing or editing department.

Moving right along — and speaking of writing — there's lots of writing to read in this issue. The 2015 AfterBurn Report is done, in case you want to know how the Burn went. There's a BRC Census FAQ posted at the Black Rock City Census Team's new home in the Burning Man Journal. We've got all kinds of reporting back from the Third Annual Burning Man European Leadership Summit. And BRC über-veteran Annie Oak offers some excellent tips for Theme Camp management.

As usual, there are beautiful photographs and videos in here, but there's also the Zendo Project's two-hour Harm Reduction Training from BRC 2015, which is the more useful kind of inspiring. Plus a few other Burning Man bits 'n' bobs.

Hope you're having a good February. It's duck season, so make sure you've visited tickets.burningman.org lately and gotten all your ducks in a row. If you want to go to Burning Man, that is. And it's time to start thinking about that, because...

The Man burns in 191 days.

In the past, we’ve reported our findings on our own blog, but now we’re going to come straight to you, right here in the Burning Man Journal. By way of introducing ourselves, we’d like to answer a few FAQs we receive from Burners every year."

Doing It Right: Theme Camp Management Insights from Camp Soft Landing

Amazing playa tips! Annie Oak writes:

"If playa years are like dog years, I’m a 140-year old Burner. Permit me the prerogative of age to make a few unvarnished observations about Theme Camp management that we are passing along to our successors."

Harm Reduction Training with the Zendo Project

For the fourth year running, the Zendo Project offered harm reduction services for Black Rock City citizens having overwhelming experiences. They provide a safe space and professionally trained staff, and they train a huge herd of interested and experienced volunteers to help take care of their fellow Burners.

Zendo has just released the video of their on-playa training session. Your faithful Jackrabbit was present for this training, and it was an amazing display of collaboration, Civic Responsibility and human caring. In addition to Zendo workers, it features presentations from other Theme Camps and participants, the Black Rock Rangers, and BRC Emergency Services. The Zendo Project writes:

"For the fourth year, the Zendo Project offered psychedelic harm reduction services at Burning Man in Black Rock City, Nevada. During the event, 170 volunteers contributed a combined 1,700 hours for the project and were able to assist 161 guests going through difficult or overwhelming experiences."

In 2016, with the help of sponsors and donations, organizers hope to expand this year's experience to include up to 30 installations, an art car exhibit, and headline music performances in and around Reno's downtown ReTrack area."

Wick's Symbols for the 10 Principles

Aussie Burner Wick has come up with these artistic interpretations of the 10 Principles as intricate icons. Wick writes:

"I have produced a series of ten geometric symbols inspired by, and representing the hallowed Ten Principles of Burning Man. They're beautiful to look at, and if you delve into their sacred geometric forms, you may even find some deep connection between each symbol with the corresponding Principle."

Wick has generously offered these symbols under a Creative Commons license, which means they can be used, remixed and shared alike for any non-commercial projects.

Thank You for Supporting Art in Black Rock City!

Here's a big thank-you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year, whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa! We saw more art projects in Black Rock City than ever before (over 400 installations!), including more fire art than ever (over 100 pieces!), and 650 incredible Mutant Vehicles.

While it may seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we're getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!

We were listening to ...

NervePincher — Trips & Stalls (2016)

  • That new, new underground Oakland electronic wobble-sound. Also, he's giving it away.

  • Warning: causes instantaneous deprogramming.

Rodriguez — Cold Fact (1970) and Coming from Reality (1971)

  • Your Jackrabbit just watched Searching for Sugar Man last night, which is also highly recommended. Its basically the story of the best rock concert of all time.
