When you scroll down and look at the list of credits in the next Jackrabbit Speaks, you’ll notice the name Will Chase has moved from “Editor” to “Emeritus”. This simple copy and paste operation belies the complexity of emotions behind “graduating” from Burning Man.
After 13 years with the Burning Man Project, the time has come for me to move on to the next big opportunity to facilitate change in the world. Next week, I’m excited to start work as the first Director of Content and Community for Maker Faire, where I’ll bring the skills I’ve learned at Burning Man to another global community of passionate, creative people poised to change the world: the Maker Movement.
I want to take this opportunity to thank YOU, loyal readers, for being who you are, doing what you do, and staying engaged and active in this incredible community. I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet some of you on playa and out in the world, and you never fail to impress me with your passion and your goosebump-inducing stories about how Burning Man has changed your life. It’s why I do what I do.
Through all our communications channels, my goal has to been to hold a mirror up to this community in order to share the amazing things you do, in hopes of inspiring more people to be their fully-expressed selves — in ways large or small — and to connect with others who’ll fan the flames of their inspiration. And if we light up just one person, I consider it a victory. But admittedly, it can be a bit weird to hit “send” on a Jackrabbit and watch it go, only to quietly wonder what’s happening on the receiving end.
So as I hand over the reins to the stellar Burning Man Communications team, including Managing Editor Jon Mitchell, I’d like to turn the tables. My email address, willchase@burningman.org, will continue to be active since I plan to continue volunteering with the External Relations Team (a group I've been with for 7 years), contributing to the Burning Man Journal, and participating in other aspects of Burning Man as much as possible. I’d love it if you were to say hello
(yes, even the haters who think I’m just a brainless shill for the Man). I’d love to hear your story, or just hear that you’re out there — this is, after all, a participatory culture.
It’s been an incredible honor and privilege to serve this community, and to be a part of it. Keep the fires burning, people. I’ll see you on playa.

A Burning Man Farewell: Will Chase Moves On
Yep. Wow. This is real, huh? Maid Marian writes:
"After 13 productive years working on Burning Man’s technology, art, and communications teams, Will Chase — who has always preferred the job title Minister of Propaganda — has accepted an offer to join Maker Faire as their inaugural Director of Content and Community.
Though Will is moving on in his career (to an organization with deep community and philosophical ties with Burning Man, I might add), we know his influence on who we are and what we do will continue to be felt. For a start, he’ll continue to be a part of the External Relations Team and will be a guest blogger on the Burning Man Journal from time to time."

Mutant Vehicle Process Changes
Chef Juke writes:
"The Department of Mutant Vehicles is updating the system for processing Mutant Vehicle applications in 2016.
The increased volume of Mutant Vehicle applications (nearly 1,000 in 2015) means the DMV must be more selective than ever. As always, having a vehicle on the playa in the past is no guarantee of being invited in the future. Please put your best foot forward in your application.
The Mutant Vehicle application form will be closing earlier this year: Noon (PST) on April 13.

The Administrative Assistant supports the Art & Civic Engagement (ACE) Department inclusive of Playa Arts, Civic Arts, Burners Without Borders, and the Director of ACE in areas of program administration, and general office and business operations. Position Available: Project Manager
Location: San Francisco, CA and Black Rock City, NV
Job Summary
The Project Manager serves as a co-lead of the Burning Man Art Central Arts Team (CAT). As such this position holds primary responsibility for managing successful processes towards the production of art for the Burning Man event. This position is focused on quality of experience for the artists, volunteers, and participants, including the development and implementation of tools and resources to support Burning Man Arts’ activities. Further, this position works to advance the culture of Burning Man through playing a consultative and collaborative role with the Civic Arts team as to how the work created for the playa might live out in the world.
Judgment, professionalism, and initiative are frequently exercised in answering and interpreting verbal and written communications and projects. The ability to succeed within a complex multi-department environment along with the ability to manage multiple projects is required. A superior customer service attitude, and a documented history of technical and business management skills is a must. Work involves considerable internal and external contacts, complex non-routine tasks, access to confidential information and project management of external artists and projects.

Position Available: Associate Director, Event Operations
Location: San Francisco, CA and Black Rock City, NV
Job Summary
Based out of the Burning Man San Francisco office year-round, the Black Rock City (BRC) Associate Director, Event Operations (ADEO) will oversee and direct the ongoing operations of Black Rock City civic and business operations departments and staff, which include Department of Public Works (DPW), BRC Outside Services (OSS), Burner Express (BXB), Ticketing, Purchasing and Cafe & Ice.
Additionally this role will provide business operations support to the wider Burning Man Project, while working closely with the Event Operations Director to provide input into strategic planning, business modeling, plans and budgeting for the overall long-term success of Burning Man.

Report from the European Leadership Summit: Who's Leading, Who's Following?
Caveat writes (and we agree wholeheartedly):
"[N]ot once have I ever heard [Burning Man staffers], ever, suggest that Burning Man (the entity) has a plan that Burning Man (the culture) will be expected to fall in behind. Not once have I ever heard Burning Man’s leadership suggest that they are, in fact, 'leading' the Regionals.
On the contrary: there’s a kind of an awed glee at everything the Regionals do. A sense of wonder. Far from saying 'we need to figure out what the Regionals are going to do next,' the line is almost always: 'Can you believe what they’re doing now? These people are AMAZING!'"

"Playa Lung" Research Survey
Are Burners taking proper precautions to protect themselves from any unknown effects of inhaling playa dust? That is the question a research team of physicians affiliated with the University of California San Francisco is hoping to answer.
The phenomenon colloquially dubbed “playa lung" is going under the microscope, and you are invited to participate. If you have experienced respiratory breathing problems either during or immediately after being in the Black Rock Desert, please consider taking this five-minute, anonymous survey:

The researchers have particular clinical training and expertise in wilderness medicine, and they are looking to understand "playa lung" symptoms, time-course, and risk factors. Results of this study could lead to improved health and safety recommendations for all future Burners, including you! While Burning Man is not affiliated with this study, we are happy to share this information with the community.
All surveys will remain anonymous and no one will be able to link your answers back to you.

Remembrance Plaque: Names of Burners Lost: 2015-2016

"Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences.
This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, using this form. (Please DO NOT hit reply to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20 to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after 7/20 will be added to next year's plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)

Nick “Wolfeye” King’s book of Burner portraits will warm your heart. Proceeds benefit future Temples! Nick writes:
"It was three days before I discovered David Best’s towering Temple of Forgiveness. Fortunately, I had a photograph of Ilene that I was able to tape to the Temple and space to add some words of remembrance. The sacredness with which Burners treated the Temple, the writings and memorabilia moved me enormously.
When the Temple burned on Sunday night, I alternated between tears of grief and joy, and taking photographs of the burn. I am a photographer, after all.
In those moments, I vowed to do something to help support the construction of future Temples, but I wasn’t sure how."

Harlan Emil Gruber's Amethyst Portal in Austin for SXSW March 12-20
One of your Jackrabbits is in a long-term relationship with Harlan's portals. That sounds weird... and it is! But in the wonderful sense. Awonsaihu writes:
"The Amethyst Portal, which debuted at Burning Man 2009 and returned to the playa in 2011, has gone on to be installed at many festivals around the world.
It is now going out into the default world where it will have a prominent public exhibition in Austin, Texas during SXSW March 12-20.
It will be located at 1700 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704 by the Picnik Café housed in a converted shipping container."
