Citizens of Black Rock City!
It is August, and what does that mean? Early Arrival Passes for Theme Camps are being ordered. The deadline to edit your EA pass order has come and gone, and thank you all for once again helping improve the process and make things easier and smoother.
I am attaching some detailed instructions for how to separate the EA passes that will arrive in one big PDF so that camp leads and Village mayors can distribute them to campers as needed.
August also means many of us are starting to feel anxious and overwhelmed. Burning Man takes a lot of work and cooperation. I hope we can all be a bit nicer to each other these days and maybe even more helpful than usual. Everyone has a to do list they might not get to the bottom of.A bit of humour and gentleness can go along way when panic is on the rise.
I know we are going to get there, and it won't be long now. I hope you all find laughter as you pack up those bins and see the delight as we think of one more thing to do and list to make.

1. Early Arrival Pass information and Theme Camp up and running
Early Arrival Pass information:
Our friends in the tech department have offered several suggestions splitting a large file of pdfs into single files that can be distributed to camp members.
A. It looks like there are several ways to split a PDF:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5cxOEqD6sg
http://www.howtogeek.com/201519/use-your-mac%E2%80%99s-preview-app-to-merge-split-mark-up-and-sign-pdfs/
http://www.ehow.com/how_5735680_split-file-multiple-pdf-files.html
B: Version 1
1 Create a Destination Folder on my desktop
2 Open EA pdf in Adobe Acrobat
3 Select Document > Split Document
4 Number of Pages > 1
5 Output Options > Specific Folder
6 Select Specific Folder > Destination Folder
7 Save = All EA pages should be broken into individual EA pdfs
8 Email out each and color code or add the recipients name to the file name
C: Version 2
1 Create a Destination Folder on my desktop
2 Open EA pdf in Adobe Acrobat
3 Select Document > Extract Pages
4 Select the page number ie: 1 to 1, Select Extract Pages as Separate Files
5 Save page to Destination Folder: Naming EA with the recipient to get it and the EA # assigned to them from the page
6 Start process over for next page
Theme Camps Up and Running
The Placement Team gives Early Arrival Passes to Theme Camps. The last day to arrive early is Saturday August 29. The Gate opens on Sunday at 10 AM and the Placement Team are not able to hold your reserved space after Saturday night.
We expect you to be in your camp by Saturday August 29 and we expect your camp to be up and running on Monday August 31.
If for some reason you are not going to make it - please try to let us know. We will have limited access to email and we want to know that you've had trouble. We'll do our best to hold your spot, but we need to know you are on your way.

2. Is a Bucket on your Burning Man List?
All campers should include one 5 gallon utility bucket with lid on their packing list.
Why?
#1. Our playa landlord, the Bureau of Land Management has stepped up their inspections for environmental compliance.
They are teaming with our Earth Guardians to find leaky RVs dripping eck on the desert. A five gallon utility bucket may be just the thing to manage those drips and keep the environment safe!
#2. Two words: "emergency toilet".
In the unlikely event of sustained heavy rains, a five gallon bucket can serve as that special facility, should port-a-potty servicing be delayed, or travel to portas become difficult. An inter-webs search for "Luggable Loo" will prove that this is not a new idea, and special lids can be obtained for a more 'familiar' experience, and less chance of experiencing the heart break of large butt ring.
Go on, search. You'll find stuff like 'Double Doodie bags' with 'BioGel'. Wow.
Do not, under any circumstances, leave a used emergency toilet behind. Nope. That goes for pee jars too. Seriously, it's yours, you deal with it.

3. Insurance for Theme Camps
Dear camp leads,
In the event that you are looking for a way to get liability insurance for your camp, there are two options that have been developed specifically to cover Black Rock City Projects.
First of all, we're happy that options exist for people who want insurance for their playa projects, but Burning Man doesn't necessarily endorse, require, or recommend any specific policy or require anyone to carry insurance. Either program might be better for your specific needs than the other and it may well be worth seeking a quote from both.
-- Heffernan Insurance Brokers has offered liability insurance policies for projects in Black Rock City for the past few years. The carrier of these policies is Lloyds of London. This program has recently become available again for 2015. The link to begin the process of applying for a policy is here: http://www.heffins.com/insuranceontheplaya as well as an FAQ that answers common questions about the program. They need to get applications by August 9th to include them in the program this year.
Briefly, they are offering a $2 Million aggregate, $1 Million per occurrence liability insurance policy. They say it will cover art installations, theme camps, and mutant vehicles but will exclude vehicles that are plated for on-road use and pyrotechnics (fireworks and some related things are excluded but propane flame effectscan be covered). If you have any questions about the details of the policy, your best bet is to reach out directly to Heffernan directly through the link above or by contacting Sara Sinining at SaraS@HeffINS.com or 714-361-7702 (direct) or 1-855-700-1988 (toll free).
-- Fractured Atlas (a NY-based non-profit that provides services to artists and art groups) has worked with us to develop a new liability insurance option that groups working on BRC projects can buy into this year
More information about that program is here: https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/liability/BurningMan.
Again, we're sending you this information in case you do feel a need to carry insurance for your camp but do not require any coverage.
Thank you for your time and good luck with your projects!

4. Donate to the Paiute Tribe
Hi fellow burners,
As many of you know, Comfort & Joy has had a long-standing commitment to the native Paiute community of the playa. Our founder, Kitten, started this commitment years ago and it has been an enriching experience for our camp and has served as an example of what we represent.
We will be holding our annual on-playa food drive at the Comfort & Joy village @ 8 o'clock and Donnicker--September 7th--8th. Please bring your unopened non-perishables (fresh fruits and vegetables are welcome) for package and delivery to drop-off locations in Nixon, NV. Additionally, this year there will be an option for you to make a donation directly to the Paiute community. No amount is too small--every single dollar is appreciated and needed! If anyone is thinking of making a substantial donation, keep in mind that donations are tax deductible. Donors will receive a letter for tax filing purposes.
Here is the direct link to make a donation:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/support-the-pyramid-lake-paiute-tribe-tickets-17736377984
Funds raised will go directly to the Paiute Tribal Community Food Bank in Nixon, NV. Within the tribal boundaries there are approximately 2000 people, and 40% of working-age adults in the tribe are unemployed. So, the food bank provides a vital service to the families and individuals of the community.
The Northern Paiute people have been in the Playa region for over 1000 years. They are a people of rich traditions and kind spirit. In particular, It is part of their belief system that gay people (or Two Spirits as they're often called within the tribe) should be treated with respect and reverence. Also, Two Spirits often serve as spiritual leaders within the community.
It would truly be a wonderful thing to acknowledge this kindness and reverence with our own generosity.
Thank you and warm regards,
