ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

See that number right down there? The one after "The Man burns in"? Yeah, that one.
Enough said, right?
Well, just in time, we've received our event permit from the BLM (phew!) so we can actually do this thing. Hells. Yeah.
OK then, time for all the last-minute stuff, including super important information about sexual assault, and how you can help prevent it from happening to you, your friends, or anybody else on playa.
Also, last call for Burner Express bus tickets, and critical information about how to handle your poop on playa. Yes, we said it.
Lastly, read along with us as John Curley sends his lovely dispatches from the building of Black Rock City, happening as we type.
Get ready, folks ...
The Man burns in 23 days.

Confronting Sexual Assault in Black Rock City
Sexual assault at Burning Man, while uncommon and unconscionable, does happen. In many ways Black Rock City is a city like any other, and it faces many of the same public safety issues as any other urban area.
But Black Rock City also has powerful community resources to address sexual assault and support survivors, and we want you to know about them. Please read our blog series on sexual assault and stay tuned for more posts. In the series so far:

Let's Talk about Your Poop
We have to talk about your poop. Yes, yours. Sanitation safety (and sanity) is an important topic, to say the least, and here are some key things you need to know.
-
Bring a 5-gallon bucket with a trash bag and some kitty litter to use as an alternative to the potties, should they become inaccessible (or unpumpable) during an extended rainstorm (which can happen — yes, really).
-
If it wasn't in your body, don't put it in the potty!! Ever!!
-
Only use 1-ply toilet paper in the potties, and never put baby wipes in the potties (even the compostable or biodegradable ones).
-
Need to find a bank of porta potties at night on playa? Look for the tall blue beacon lights.
-
New banks of porta-potties are now located on the 12 o'clock side of the Man and near the Deep-playa Music Zone (DMZ), for your added convenience.
-
Never ever poop on the playa. Not only is it disgusting (somebody has to clean it up), it's illegal — you can be cited by the BLM.

A Tribute to the Temple of Grace
Jonny Bird writes:
"What goes into making a structure that moves thousands of people to tears?
American artist David Best and his crew built their first temple at Burning Man back in 2001. Nearly 15 years later, we're now looking back on their 2014 masterpiece to pay respect to their beautiful work. Produced by Ignite Channel as a gift to the crew, this heartfelt video tribute offers an exclusive glimpse into the creative process behind the awe-inspiring Temple of Grace. Director Jonny Kloberdanz and the Ignite team captured their journey last year in Petaluma, California, where we witness this elegant architectural feat en route to resurrection."

2015 Unofficial Map of Black Rock City
This is exactly how Burning Man culture is supposed to work. So, a team of wonderful people create a Google map of everything in Black Rock City using whatever data they can pull from wherever and filling in the blanks with contributions from Burners everywhere (here's the submission form). Now there's an
amazing map all of us can use to find art, camps, facilities, porta-potties and more.
But that's just the beginning, apparently. Now a group led by someone named Cayenne has built a tool called Playa Planner using that map's data, plus other stuff, that lets you make a whole schedule of stuff to do in BRC this year, which you can print and bring with you.
None of this is supported by Burning Man HQ, btw. (And neither is BurnerMap, which we told you about last time.) People just up and did it. Isn't that cool?

Help Wanted: Go Postal
The great (and potentially dangerous) Nutmeg Alfredo writes:
"We of the postal persuasion invite you to figure out various ways to join our ranks and play with us. There are three postal outfits on the playa: 3, 6, and 9. Each has their strengths and WEAKNESSES. If you like improvisational theater. If you like toying with the link between bureaucracy and love, you may want to TRY to climb the postal ranks. Phd in counseling not required, but helpful.
Start by filling out an application and reviewing our training manual.
Then show up dressed to GO POSTAL. Work a window. Deliver Mail. Either way, your life will be changed. Creating your own mail is also a great way to go. We regularly print out 5-10K of our favorite images = postcards = mail. At the very least bring pre-stamped postcards to offer. Hand someone a pen and postcard at 3am and see if they can write their address. That's always fun.
The Burner Map app mailing label creation is detailed in this video.
You are the one we've been waiting for. Be a hero. GO Postal!"

Time To Burn 2015 Now Available for iOS and Android
Some Burners would never dare take out their phone on the playa. Heck, some Burners would scorn anyone who did. One way to understand the principle of Immediacy is that we need it precisely because of how phones take us out of the present moment.
But everyone gets to Burn their own way, and for those who feel their Burn is enhanced by the power of software, there's Time To Burn. Wizard writes:
"The app with the most sophisticated event searching system anywhere and Rockstar Librarian's Music Guide to the event, just became useful off the playa as well. Whether you are a virgin wondering what all the hoopla is about, a returning Burner packing up your RV, or a veteran searching the playa for bacon, we've got you covered. Our labor of love, and our gift to all the citizens of Black Rock City."

The Science of Playa Transformation
Alek writes:
"Scientists at Oxford University and UCLA are studying the psychology of Burning Man. They need your help! This short questionnaire will give them insight into why people go to Burning Man and how it changes them. They want to hear from Virgins, Veterans, and Burn-curious (even if you couldn't score a ticket this year).
Find them near Census at Center Camp to learn more about this project and participate in other studies. Look out for the sign that says 'PLAY GAMES FOR SCIENCE!'"

Delta the Cosmic Ranger Puppet from Outer Space Seeks the Burning Man

CosmicRanger writes:
"Greetings, Sentient Beings of Earth! My name is Delta, I am from the PHI Galaxy.
I have been sent here to Earth to study, protect, and explore your pale blue planet, and I've been told that Burning Man is an excellent place for me to meet highly expressive human beings!
My journey on Earth is being recorded and cut together to create a unique documentary series that combines honest, diligent journalism with a creative and dramatic story arc. I interview many different subjects in an attempt to learn about humanity, while also fending off visits from space by friend and foe alike!
Burning Man offers me the greatest possible opportunity for extreme openness on camera. Filters off. Total free expression.
However, I need a bit of help getting to Burning Man, and surviving the playa. My human slaves (a.k.a. my production company) have created an Indiegogo campaign to help! There you will find more information about The Delta Project .

World's First Children's Book about Burning Man
Peter writes:
"A children’s book about Burning Man?
Of course! Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? Children have been going to Burning Man since its inception on Baker Beach in 1986. The kids already get it. It’s the rest of us who have to remember to have fun as we walk through life. And there’s no better place to learn that than Burning Man - The World’s Biggest Playground, a children's book I am about to publish with your help, love and support.
My wife and I have been going to Burning Man since 2008, in fact we got married there in 2010. This year, our four-year-old daughter is coming with us. And with your help we can bring the beauty, joy, exhilaration, hard work, and most of all the fun of Burning Man to kids everywhere."

Great Western Marketplace in Reno Hosting Burners
Where: 8455 Summit Ridge Drive, Reno, NV 89523
When: Friday 8/28-Sunday 8/30, 11-7 on Fri/Sat, 11-4 on Sun
Newt writes:
"The Great Western Marketplace is a repurposed big box store building with approximately 50 vendors who create one of a kind items ... kind of a brick and mortar Etsy. Many of the vendors have been gearing up for Burners who will be passing the GWM on the I-80 in Reno, and have been creating one of a kind items for the playa, from bikes, to playa wear, to Moop Bags, to parasols.
There will be a banner on the building visible from I-80 should any Burners want to stop in and check it out! 8455 Summit Ridge Drive, Reno, NV 89523, next to Home Depot on McCarran!"

We were listening to ...
A serendipitous series:
Jon Thorne & Danny Thompson — Watching the Well (2011)
Dan Berglund — Dan Berglund's Tonbruket (2010)
Mysterious and instrumental, acoustic, ambient, oddly playa-ready.
Also, at one point during the compilation of this JRS, we just jammed out to BMIR and pretended we were waiting in line.
