GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Here we go folks! We've dipped into the waters of August, and we're hurtling headlong into the soon-to-be-incarnated Black Rock City of 2015, wherein we will gather together to conjure the magic that is Burning Man.

It's gonna be hot, it's gonna be dusty, it's gonna be mind-blowing, inspiring and humbling. And that's just getting through the Gate. :-)

The Department of Public Works are as we type on the parched floor of the Black Rock Desert, having pounded in the ceremonial (and equally functional) Golden Spike on Sunday, marking the spot on which the Man will stand, and from which the bones of Black Rock City itself will be cast.

It's all happening, people!

We've been perusing the art installations and the theme camps and the activities and the mutant vehicles and the oh man what the hell is that that are going to be gracing Black Rock City this year, and holy bejeezus this is gonna be out of hand. We couldn't be more excited. You? Yeah, thought so.

OK now enough of this jibber-jabber and back to preparation, because ...

The Man burns in 30 days!!

Promote Your Camps Events with a Promo on Burning Man Information Radio

Bobzilla writes:

"BMIR is the official radio station of Burning Man and one of the best ways to reach the citizens of BRC. Now that placement is out and you know your playa address, it's a great time to record an announcement promoting your camp's performances and events. BMIR is on the internet all year long at BMIR.org, and they'll start running your announcements as soon as you can get them made. All the details about how to record an announcement and where to send it can be found here.

You don't have to wait until the Gate opens to start your Burn. Start your Burn now with Burning Man Information Radio now. Here's how."

Burner Express Pick-up/Drop-off in San Francisco

Burner Express pick-up and drop-off in San Francisco will be along Fulton Street, on the south side of the Asian Art Museum near Civic Center Plaza. This is close to where it has picked up in prior years. The closest address for mapping purposes is 148 Fulton St, San Francisco. The closest BART station is Civic Center (walking distance). Link to Google map

Please note that there will be no BART service on Labor Day weekend (September 5, 6 and 7) running between San Francisco and the East Bay. For passengers returning from BRC to San Francisco, the Burner Express bus will make two drop off stops. One stop will be at the El Cerrito Del Norte BART station, and the second stop will be in San Francisco at the same location as pick-up. We appreciate your patience with the extra time this may take — we want to make sure passengers can more easily get to their final destinations.

Changes to Emergency Road Services at Burning Man 2015

In 2010, Burning Man and AAA of Northern California, Nevada and Utah entered into a mutually-beneficial agreement to provide emergency roadside and lockout assistance to participants in Black Rock City. In exchange for staging within our event site to more easily serve their members, AAA offered free assistance to all participants within the BRC fence line.

AAA will not be staged within our site in 2015 or offering any assistance to anyone within the BRC fence line (AAA’s emergency roadside assistance agreement with their members actually never covered these off-road areas). This year in the vicinity of Burning Man, AAA will only serve their card-holding members whose vehicles are positioned along state highway 447, county road 34, and other local county-maintained roads and highways.

But fear not! Prior to 2010, a group of dedicated lock-out experts from our Emergency Services Department (ESD) came to the aid of participants in need, and these generous individuals will be back in action this year to help.

For lockouts, and other emergency roadside assistance that might be available, ask for help at Playa Info in the Center Camp portal Monday 8/31 - Monday 9/7, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm. After hours there is a lockout dropbox with forms to fill out to request service.

After-hours emergency-only requests can be made at the Ranger outposts:

  • Ranger HQ at Esplanade and 5:45
  • 3:00 and Carny Outpost
  • 9:00 and Carny Outpost

Want to Fly into BRC? Make Sure Your Air Carrier Is Approved!

Thinking about flying into the Black Rock City airport? There are strict rules for Air Carriers that sell tickets for flights, including that they have the appropriate permits and contracts. Please see the list of approved Air Carriers.

Carriers not listed on that site may not be approved to provide service at the BRC Airport. Check before you purchase a ticket!

Reddit AMA with Will Chase — August 16

Mark your calendar! On August 16 at 3pm PDT, Will Chase, Burning Man’s Minister of Propaganda, will participate in a Reddit AMA to answer your burning questions!

Will is responsible for all the public-facing written communications for Burning Man, including the Jackrabbit Speaks newsletter, content on Burning Man websites, social media channels, and the Voices of Burning Man blog.

In this AMA, Will answers your questions about Burning Man, and his experiences serving its dynamic, inspiring and passionate community for over a decade.

New Burning Man Drones Policy

You’ll likely be seeing fewer drones flying over Black Rock City this year. The new policy allows for a small number that can be used for media coverage, event operations, art documentation and art performance. Applications for drone projects close August 14.

The Temple of Promise is Almost There!

It has been a long march to the playa for the Temple of Promise, but they're gonna make it with a little bit more help from us.

Their Kickstarter campaign to cover the beautiful grove of trees they're building in the center has reached its goal! Yay! But they'll still take whatever resources they can get to help cover the costs of creating this spiritual sanctum in BRC.

You can see amazing photos and stories of the build and make tax-deductible donations on the Temple of Promise website.

Black Rock City Rises Again

The one and only John Curley writes:

"Hey look: We understand that everything about Burning Man has changed. We know it was better last year. We read all the blogs and all the comments, and we read all the newspaper stories that, when you think about, reveal nothing if not how stupidly difficult it is to keep pulling this off every year. And we’ve been looking at the archival stuff that the org has been posting, and we’ve stayed up crazy late watching the 20-year-old videos that Danger Ranger has been unearthing.

So maybe more than anything we kind of can’t believe that all this is still happening."

Here’s What Burning Man Is Doing to End Turnkey Culture

Perhaps you recently saw postings on Airbnb of playa-ready vehicles and accomodations just waiting to be commodified? Or maybe you just remember the fiascos with turnkey camping at past events? Yeah, well, we're not gonna let the principles that make Burning Man what it is get undermined.

As Burning Man CEO Marian Goodell put it: “We are absolutely committed to ceasing the plug and play culture.”

We're taking three new steps this year to stop turnkey culture in its tracks.

Behind the Scenes with the Mazu Temple Builders

The Hun writes:

"For nearly a full year now, an international crew of artists, craftspeople, designers, builders, engineers (and at least one poet) have been working nonstop to create a temple for Mazu, Goddess of the Empty Sea — a piece you’ll soon be able to experience and interact with on playa.

What’s more, they’ve turned this project into a new arts collective that could keep them working on similar projects for years to come."

Burning Man YouTube Channel

The Burning Man YouTube Channel celebrates Burning Man's history, ethos, international community, and growing year-round culture. Here we share the story of Burning Man's evolution in the world, and serve as reminders of the past, landmarks for the present, and inspiration for the future.

Our current featured video, "Burning Man is Everywhere!", shows all the ways Burning Man has grown beyond Black Rock City and is bringing these special things we do to the whole world. It highlights the work of Black Rock Solar, Burners Without Borders and Burning Man Arts, and it shows how all that work grows naturally out of (and back into) Black Rock City. If you want a way to show your people how much Burning Man means to you, share this video with them. If you're going to be in BRC, stop by Everywhere Pavillion at 6:25 and Esplanade, meet the people who work on these programs, and find out how to get involved!

Graffiti Control at Burning Man 2015: Read the Tattoos

Graffiti on playa art is one of those thorny patches where the Ten Principles all contradict each other. Sunshine Daydream updates us on a way out of this mess that playa artists liked last year:

"We all know that some installations like the Temple invite Radical Self-Expression from anyone, but tagging other art installations (like the Man) constitutes graffiti, which is not only a crime but a violation of the artist’s intention and the 10 Principles we live by. So, how do we know which art is which? Let the artists tell us!

Thanks to graphic artist Huggable who made my vision beautiful, artists can again choose between “Don’t Mark The Art” or “Express Here” stickers when they check in at ARTery, then display the symbols on/near their works to either invite radical expression or invite it elsewhere. The entire community will know the artists’ intentions expressed in this radically clear manner, and help each other respect them.

Balancing all 10 Principles makes BRC rock, so Playatech's latest spoof on Decommodification is Gifting a Radically Inclusive process for Radically Self-Reliant Participation in a Communal Effort of Immediacy to support Radical Self-Expression except where Civic Responsibility demands we Leave No Trace! Get it?

Check out both images here, and please look for a 'tag me' sticker before pulling out your marker!"

Come Crush It With Recycle Camp

Spanky writes:

"Making drinking plans for your camp? Do those plans include lots and lots of cans? Want to unload those empty cans on playa while also helping the city of Gerlach? Well come on down to Recycle Camp and SHOW US YOUR CANS!!!

At Recycle Camp we want all of your ALUMINUM cans as part of our gift to the playa. We are located at 6:00 and Center Circle behind the Center Camp Café and will be open every day until 5pm. No drop-offs allowed. When you get there you will help us quickly separate your cans before riding the Crushinator, our bicycle powered can-crushing apparatus, to compact the cans so we can store as many as possible before scrapping the aluminum off-site.

All of the money we generate from can recycling is donated to the Gerlach school system. We only accept aluminum cans, so please keep all of your soup or heavy metal cans. If you are unsure if it is aluminum, a good rule of thumb is if you can't crush it, then we don't want it. Also, some stout beers like Guinness have a plastic widget that cannot be recycled with the aluminum. Please remove or be conscious of it before bringing them to us.

Pro-tip from the Recyclonauts: bring a MESH bag to store all of your cans in. Giant black plastic garbage bags don't allow your cans to dry out, so please store them in a mesh bag before bringing them over to Recycle Camp and help make things a little less juicy for us when we crush them. Be smart, plan ahead, Recycle Camp wants YOU to come CRUSH it with us!"

Let Last Flamethrower Burn Your Art Targets

Shing Khor writes:

"In its past incarnation, Flamethrower Shooting Gallery told participants, 'You, too, can burn the Man!' Participants shot flaming gasoline at 5' effigies of the Man.

Now, Last Flamethrower (a Charnival installation) wants to burn your art. We are inviting artists to create sculptures specifically designed as flamethrower targets. Participants will shoot our big-ass flamethrower at a sculpture garden created by you, the community. Imagine how your (non-mooping) metal, stone, or kevlar creation will sculpt a flaming stream of gasoline. Maybe it will create a fountain, spray a big fan of fire, catch fuel to run a steam engine, or whistle.

Interested? Have a great idea? Email Smash."

Be Part of a Film Project on Playa: The Girl from the Song

Marta writes:

"We are a group of Spanish film freaks who are going to be taking on the incredible endeavor to shoot a film at the playa this year. We are looking for any kind of help from whoever wants to collaborate with us.

From accommodation in Reno during August and post Burning Man, to people who are going to Burning Man who want to appear in the film, to camps who would like us to shoot there (or any other way you may think of).

Message us on Facebook or get in touch with me (Marta)."

Calling All Sign Language Interpreters, We Want You

Squirt Gun writes:

"PlayaTerps is a volunteer group of ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters who provide interpreting services on playa for deaf and hard-of-hearing Burners to communicate with those of you don't know sign language yet. See our website and contact Squirt Gun to connect with us. Our message board and interpreting request binder will be at Da Dirty Hands Theme camp this year where Rod's Road and Ballyhoo Street and 5:30 intersect."

Black Rock Yearbook Is Accepting Camp Group Shot Submissions

DougJ11 writes:

"The Black Rock Yearbook will be in center camp circle on the corner of A (3:00) and Inner Circle. Come by for your individual yearbook photos!

Have a big camp that needs a group photo shot? Our 2015 Camp group shot form is up on our website.

Are you a great photographer and want to do a shift at our camp?
We have some slots open for guest photographers. Looking for fun, relaxed pros who can shoot. email us at info@blackrockyearbook.com

Bring your 2014 yearbook by our camp for us to sign it... and maybe you can sign ours too."

Speak at Ignite BRC

Brady writes:

"Ignite comes to BRC. On Tuesday night at 8PM, we'll have a session consisting of ~10 Ignite talks on the Esplanade.

What's an Ignite talk? It's a story that's exactly 5 minutes long, told by a speaker who's working with 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds (ready or not). At Phage we're looking for talks that appeal to a science crowd.

Presenting at Ignite is fun, it's fast, and the format forces you to really think about what you want to say. Tell us about your wild ideas, war stories, favorite projects, or whatever you're obsessing about now, at work or at play. Your talk can be geeky, fanciful, poignant, educational, and/or funny. Talks will be selected the week of August 17th."

Art for Trees: Burning Man 2015

Melissa Barron (aka Syn) writes:

"It’s year three for Art for Trees! Through our collective efforts with fundraising for Temple for Trees (2013) and Art for Trees (2014), our community has rallied to plant over 5,100 seedling trees to replenish a portion of the wood we burned at Burning Man over the past two years."

Help replenish the trees used to build this year's Temple of Promise by supporting Art for Trees on Indiegogo.

Bikes, Bikes and More Bikes Just in Time for Burning Man 2015

Ellen writes:

"The Kiwanis Bike Program has extra bikes for folks who arrive in Reno and need one. In addition to the reservations and the bikes we'll have at Savemart at 5th and Keystone in Reno, we have over 200 additional bikes that are playa-ready. So if you're in town and still need a bike, stop by to see us at 145 Catron Drive, Reno. Go north on Virginia Street past UNR to Parr Blvd and follow the signs to our shop. Help support our youth programs and get wheels for the playa at the same time.

For information, call 775-337-1717 or visit kiwanisbikes.org"

Talk to God Phone Booth Fundraiser

SMiles writes:

"After 14 years on the playa, it's time for the god phone to upgrade. We have big plans for a new phone booth design and technical upgrades that will make it possible to set up the booth at other events and locations to reach more people on and off the playa. Help us realize our dreams of going solar and wireless. This will make installing the phone booth possible in all kinds of environments. Our upgraded circular booth with LED lights and a laser pointing to the heavens will give the booth a futuristic feel. With upgraded mics on the phone the sound will be crystal clear.

Visit the Indiegogo page, take advantage of some great perks, and support this wonderful project. Please share and help us reach our goal."

Burner Bikes to Cuba and SHIFTPODS to Nepal

Christian writes:

"Having supported many projects and causes over 20+ years at Burning Man, members of SHIFT are taking on two projects, one in Santiago, Cuba and one in Katmandu, Nepal.

For Cuba, SHIFT will be gathering Burner bikes that are in good shape, we will clean them, pack them, ship them and distribute them for free to kids in the rural parts of Cuba. We have laid the ground-work and made the connections to make it happen. We are now working to fund the shipping and to collect the bikes at the Burn.

To help with the funding of camp and camp projects, we created the ultimate playa camping set up called the SHIFTPOD. 24 years of playa lessons have gone into creating this fast set-up, fast strike, silver reflective yurt. No more foam or tape. These can be set up in two minutes, no joke. Designed by Burners, for Burners!

In Nepal, we've built relationships with organizations providing relief after the recent devastating earthquake that displaced more than 40,000 people. Our goal is to deliver 1,000 units at cost to the people of Nepal with the help of these partners.

We are proud to be expanding beyond the playa and we encourage you to explore how you can do the same.

If you would like to help support our projects, please bring your functional bikes to SHIFT at 9:45 and Esplanade, make a donation on our webpage or donate and get SHIFTPOD! All contributions go to support the cause."

Giant Zooplankton Invades the Playa

Erratica writes:

"We have built a 100,000x scale model of an ancient microscopic marine creature, a radiolarian called Calocyclas monumentum, and we want to bring it to the playa.

As an inexperienced first-time build crew, we have had some overwhelming challenges and heartwarming triumphs, with an ever-growing team of amazing local Portland, Oregon Burners who have come out of the woodwork to help make this dream a reality.

The structure has finally been completed, now all we need is that last-minute funding to transport it to the playa and purchase the supplies we need for our Burn to send it off in a last, flaming, bittersweet goodbye. It's not the biggest or the shiniest or the fanciest, but Zooplankton is made from 100% heart and soul and friendship and raw, stubborn determination."

Tree of Missed Connections

Matthew writes:

"In the middle of a barren desert, a tree sprouts 14 feet into the air and provides shade for weary travelers. At night, the tree comes to life, with cascading light patterns sweeping down its branches toward the ground. Each branch is constructed from multi-colored LED lights that are encased in reinforced tubing, strong enough to support a person's weight. Visitors can swing from vine to vine, surrounding themselves in the fluorescent glow.

At the center of the tree's trunk lies the Book of Missed Connections, where visitors can pen notes to those they've lost touch with over their journey. This living document allows travelers to connect with their loss, share stories, reflect on our larger community, and — when the stars align — reconnect with those they thought were gone forever.

The Tree of Missed Connections is maintained by a vibrant community of artists located in Oakland. And we need your help to raise funds for last minute repairs, structural improvements and a new control box which will increase reliability and allow for additional light patterns. Please donate what you can."
