Low Income Ticket Program Update
|
 |
| |
Nimbus writes:
"If you or someone you know is thinking of applying for a Low Income Ticket, get on it! Applications are reviewed in the order they are received, so the program closes when we have enough applicants. Read about the program on our website. Get your documents in order and apply through your Burner Profile!
Heads up: there's a delay in processing Low Income applications. Normally we strive to respond to applicants within eight weeks, which means the first wave of applicants would have been notified by the end of April. Unfortunately some behind-the-scenes hitches will cause a delay of 2-3 weeks.
We know it can be harrowing waiting to hear about your application, which is why we are so excited to announce a new tool within your Burner Profile. Once you’ve submitted a Low Income Ticket application, you can monitor its status within your Profile in the Sparkly Things section."

Diversity in BRC: Census Data Interpreted by a Biracial Burner
The Census Team is doing amazing work on the Journal this year. Here's the latest. Bianca Ruffin writes:
"Diversity has become such a buzzword in recent months that I’m almost sick of it. I say this as a person that checks off a lot of columns defined as minority — I’m female, I’m black, I’m of mixed ethnicity, I speak two languages and I’m not straight. I’ve yet to truly pinpoint why I’m so frustrated with the word “diversity” outside of it often feeling like empty and misaligned rhetoric. It probably taps into some deep-rooted feelings I’ve grown up with as a mixed-race minority.
Yet here I am: discussing diversity and Burning Man."

What Have We Learned So Far About Art, Money, and the Renaissance?
If you haven't been keeping up with the Art, Money and the Renaissance Blog Series, you're in luck: Caveat has written a smashing recap:
"If we succeed, this series will present new ideas and models that can be tested and tried by anyone inspired to do so, in or out of Burning Man. If we fail … well … every Burner knows that sometimes failure can be even more interesting and inspiring than success.
Plus you’ll get to see us fail. Which will be fun."

The Kids of Burning Man – Profiles in Dust
Kids have been part of Burning Man since the first gathering on Baker Beach in 1986. Many grown-up Burners are true lifers. There are even multi-generational Burner lineages now. Black Rock City is a family affair for families of all kinds, including those with little ones.
The Profiles in Dust team has put together this delightful film about what that’s like for the kids, their parents, and their neighbors in BRC.

When Art Imitates Life: The Message and Purpose of Life Cube
Another inspiring Life Cube build and burn has come and gone! KSNV in Las Vegas had this report:
"'People will paint over other people's paintings and it's all fine, and there's no rules, there's no coloring in the lines,' said Scott Cohen, Creator of Life Cube Project. 'Anybody can come, it is all free. There is no charge for anything. We offer paints, we offer chalk for people to chalk on the pavement.'"

Photo Gallery from Las Falles
We've got more in-depth coverage to come from the recent Burning Man expedition to Las Falles, a fire festival in Spain that might be one of the oldest such things in the world. Stuart and DaveX just have to finish putting their brains back together first.
In the meantime, this photo gallery will hopefully hold you over.

The Black Rock Rangers Want You!
 |
|
| |
Ranger Ranger Hold Me Closer writes:
"Would you like to really get to know Black Rock City — by walking its streets and meeting other participants? Do you like to help out when things have gotten a bit too wacky for somebody, when tempers flare, or when someone just needs a sympathetic ear?
If so, Rangering might be for you. Day and night, pairs of Black Rock Rangers can be found walking and bicycling the streets of Black Rock City: engaging with the community, enjoying the art, at the ready to help sort things out.
If that sounds like fun, please consider volunteering with us! Prospective Black Rock Rangers must be at least 18 years old and must have attended Burning Man a minimum of two times (and at least once within the past ten years).
The deadline to apply is August 1st, but trainings start as early as May, so you can get a taste of the playa before summer even starts! For more information about the Rangers and the application process, visit our website. Questions? Email us at rangers@burningman.org."

Explosions in the Sky — The Wilderness (2016)
-
We almost put the fact that there's a new Explosions in the Sky record in the Latest News section, but then we figured it would be better as a reward for getting to the bottom of the JRS.
