GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Is it just us Jackrabbits, or are people starting to get that kinda wild look in their eyes? Like, "Uh oh. It's springtime. And after that... comes summertime. And THEN... OH GOD, WHERE IS MY DUCT TAPE?" Well, everybody relax. Everything's fine. Nothing is exploding yet. (We're mostly talking to ourselves here.)

In this installment of the Jackrabbit Speaks, it's really starting to feel like Spring Training. We've got art projects looking for support, we've got greening-your-Burn tips, we've got the Ticket Transfer Tool coming online...

Oh. Speaking of tickets, are you interested in applying for the Low Income Ticket Program? That's still going on for a little longer, and applications are reviewed as they come in. So if you're looking to contribute in BRC this year but need a less pricey ticket in order to make it, go read up and apply!

'Tis also the extra-special season for the Desert Arts Preview and Artists' Network Symposium in San Francisco, two dazzling events for artists and artist-fans to network, share resources, and seek support.

It's time to finish starting to plan!

The Man burns in 135 days.

The self-serve Ticket Transfer tool opens on April 27. Through your Ticketfly account, you can assign a ticket or vehicle pass to a specific person. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Eligible items: $390 tickets, $990 tickets, Leonardo da Vinci Art Tickets, and $80 vehicle passes
  • Eligible orders: any which haven’t yet entered the shipping process
  • Each item in your order can be assigned to different people
  • Using Ticket Transfer eliminates the need for any other name change requests or ownership transfer paperwork at the Box Office
  • If you split up the items in your order, the items transferred to additional people default to Will Call pick up from the Box Office of the event. The new owner can email ticketsupport@burningman.org to arrange payment for a shipping upgrade if needed.
  • It’s more secure for recipients — transfers are one-way, and once transferred, the recipient is the new owner of the item. The recipient can transfer items on to others as well.

Happy transferring! You can find full details and instructions here.

Burning Man Presents: The Artists’ Network Symposium

Burning Man is pleased to invite our community’s artists to the second all-day Artists’ Network Symposium on May 1 in San Francisco. In the spirit of community engagement, we’ve created this fun and informative event where artists and other experts in their fields will share knowledge and connect around mutual goals and needs.

During the day, we will host a series of moderated talks and presentations along with an open session for networking with others doing impactful work in the world. These sessions, along with your feedback, will help us create future “deeper dive” events that will expand on topics relevant to you and your work. The symposium will be recorded and made available through the Burning Man website as an ongoing curriculum to help artists connect, learn, and discover resources. After the symposium, we’ll open to the public for the much-loved and anticipated annual artists’ lecture, the Desert Arts Preview.

The $20 ticket cost registers you for the full day event, including the Desert Arts Preview.

Remembrance Plaque of Burners Lost 2015-2016

Terry "Retro" Schoop writes:

"Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences.

This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, using this form.

(Please DO NOT hit reply to this newsletter to submit a name.)

Submissions must be received by July 20 to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after July 20 will be added to next year's plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!"

Oh Là Là! The Psychology of Fou Fou Ha

Mia Quagliarello writes:

"In the world of 'contemporary drag buffoon cabaret,' there’s no one like Fou Fou Ha. Over the years, you may have spotted the clown troupe roaming the playa in bawdy dress, outrageous makeup and wigs as big as RVs. Or maybe you spied them at Decompression: a rainbow of colors, stripes and curves colliding with slapstick joy, those wigs hanging on to their owners’ heads for dear life.

Who are these darling 'fools' (fou is the French word for 'crazy')? We went behind the makeup, under the wigs and through the corsets to find out. What we learned turned out to be far truer than those false eyelashes."

Burners Making Real Changes in the World? Game on!

Jane "Lioness" Lyons writes:

"Andrea [Gini], a Regional Contact for Europe and a long-time tinkerer, has joined forces with three other Burners, Nathan Parker, Ian Collingwood and Ben Ahmed, to create the Make It Go project.

The project, which kicks off in May, aims to connect Makerspaces around the world so they can skill-share, relationship-build and ultimately change the way people develop and build practical and fantastical solutions for real-world problems."

"Have you been thinking of ways to activate your community around a civic engagement project? Do you want your community project to be highlighted by Burners Without Borders?

Join the BWB Global Wave of Service, a period between now and Burning Man when BWB is challenging your local community to get out and get involved!

Last year we received 21 projects from six countries. Let's see what we can do this year! We'll be highlighting this work in Black Rock City as well as on the BWB website, showing how a collection of small actions can create a worldwide wave of impact.

The Elephant Project

Cute overload! JillyPops writes:

"We’ll be sending out 500 vinyl elephants to lucky kids all over the world to decorate, and we want you and your future little Burners to get involved! These elephants will be included in a larger installation out on the playa.

All you have to do is agree to have a group of five kids or more to decorate these 8" vinyl elephants however they like, and send back (shipping on us) sometime before July 15. We're also bringing lots of them to decorate in the Guild Workshops under the Man on the playa this year."

The Last Apothecary Call for Props

Shing Yin Khor writes:

"The Last Apothecary invites you to come play in our universe! We are building a space apothecary on a distant planet called the Black Rock, and filling it with artifacts from all over the galaxy.

The Black Rock Apothecary is filled with artifacts, traditional medicines, and ritual objects, collected from Old Earth, bought from outer rim migrants, and sourced from the far reaches of the galaxy. Think of delicate jars filled with obscure herbs, and strange clay artifacts rumoured to heal strange maladies.

We’re also looking for the outer space colony equivalent of business cards, take out menus, classified ads and more, for our 'community board,' and for use throughout the installation. Think ads for space mechanics who specialize in Old Earth infrastructure, and living pods for rent in substandard space neighbourhoods."

EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS

Gateway Burn (St. Louis Regional) — June 9-12 — Belle, MO

Robin Murphy writes:

"A city appears on the horizon. A ship flies, upside down, through the air, and then morphs into darkness. Optical illusions have always astonished humans, inspiring stories, myths, and legends. Gateway Burners is proud to announce the 2016 theme, FATA MORGANA.

Taking its name from the Arthurian antagonist Morgan Le Fay, who was believed to use this phenomenon to lure sailors to their deaths, a fata morgana is a type of optical illusion, a 'superior mirage' which makes far away objects appear to be suspended in the air, chopping them into shifting, unrecognizable specters.

We invite you to share the magic of optical illusions of all kinds through your art and participation. Join us as we blend science and fantasy to create a mind-bending landscape of mythological proportions."
