ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

The days are getting longer, the JRSes are... also getting longer, and that must mean that summer is coming. It's okay to be excited already. This issue will help with that. We're feelin' it too!
First and foremost, we're saying thank you and farewell to Lisa Hoffman, the designer of the Black Rock City Map for the past 14 years. (That means we need a new one. Is it you?) We're also launching the Burning Man Journal version of Drink Water!, a webcomic based in BRC created by D.C. Wilson. How cool is that?
Plus we've got your usual overload of great writings and images, your calls for sound performers in the Café, and even an Oxford University study of personal transformation on the playa. And more, of course, because it's long-JRS season. Hope you enjoy the extra helping of Burning Man.
The Man burns in 120 days.

Seeking New BRC Map and Guide Infographics Poster Designer
It's the end of an era — and the start of a new one! After 14 years designing the Black Rock City Map, Lisa Hoffman is stepping down from her volunteer position as the designer. We can't possibly say thank-you loudly enough; Lisa's maps are as beautiful as they are distinct, which is to say, a lot. THANK YOU, LISA!
That means we need a new artist/infographic genius to make the BRC Map. Sound like an exciting opportunity? Wanna learn more? Here are the requirements and deadlines.

See you in the dust…. BRC or Bust!

Don't Be That Asshole with a Camera
Zac Cirivello explains the Black Rock City media policy with sanity, clarity, and just a little sauciness:
"The reason is actually pretty simple. It’s about consent. Going to Burning Man isn’t agreeing to be somebody’s art model. Photographers and subjects should be agreeing to create something together. Our media policy exists to make sure all the feelings stay mutual."

@burningman on Instagram
Photo by @cliffbaise | "Radical Madness" is the name of this shot, captured in 2015 by Cliff Baise. "I consciously look for things like shape and light. I also bring my pro camera with a variety of lenses. Other than that, I simply go with the flow and float where the dust takes me. I rarely plan anything. Awesome things are happening all around and at Burning Man I'm in a hyper-aware state of observation. I simply capture the things going on that I find interesting or beautiful. I feel like it's a magic place and with that attitude, magic can not help but happen."

The Science of Playa Transformation
We know SOMETHING changes in us out there, but what exactly is it? Daniel Yudkin writes:
"Scientists at Oxford University and UCLA are studying the psychology of Burning Man. They need your help! This questionnaire will give them insight into why people go to Burning Man and how it changes them. They want to hear from virgins, veterans, and the Burn-curious (even if you haven't scored yet!). The whole thing should take no more than 10-20 minutes."

Le Attrata Fire Sculpture
Margaret Long writes:
"Oakland based fire art collective Therm is building Le Attrata, a sculpture exploring the visceral attraction and embodiment of fire. 3 turbine blast furnaces feed moth-like creatures perched atop a crystalline base, emitting heat, fire, and sound. Le Attrata is going to be the hottest thing Therm has ever created — we could melt steel if we aren't careful! Be a part of the hotness: back our Kickstarter campaign and please spread the word!"

Lumenoctis, a Portal to Another Dimension
Katalin Pazmandi writes:
"This installation is a gate to other worlds where you can experience day at night and night at day. It creates the feeling of oneness with the universe, oneness with the earth and everyone all around you. The installation will be about 28' in diameter and 12' tall, forming a a hexagonal shape with dark fabric dividing each sections. The experience can be individual or communal. In daytime the sun beams play with it, and at night it glows."

We were listening to ...
Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra — 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons (2008)
-
This record is somehow not as weird as it seems when you are listening to it, if that makes sense.
