ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

Can you hear that train a'comin'? It's a bus, actually. What we mean to say is, it's time to start making your arrangements. The Burn cometh.
And with it cometh many informations and delights! This issue's a mixture, a little last-year sparkly stuff to get you feeling it all over again, a little this-year get-ready stuff for Burners of all stripes. This issue has a couple important posts about accessibility, particularly for Burners who need sign language interpreters or use wheelchairs.
And your Jackrabbit doesn't like to play favorites, but it's time to fund-raise for the Temple. David Best and his crew are back. This temple looks breathtaking. Read on to learn how you can help bring it to life on the playa.
The Man burns in 53 days.

"BRC Weekly" Newspaper Seeks Pre-Playa Submissions
 |
|
| |
Adrian writes:
"From the creators of the legendary ‘Piss Clear’ — Black Rock City’s much-loved alternative newspaper — comes the BRC Weekly, now in its 7th year of publication, with a circulation of 30,000 on the playa.
Check out previous issues
We are currently working on our best issue ever, and seeking submissions for articles, features, etc. Here’s what we’re looking for:
-
Articles about surviving relationships (or ex-relationships) at Burning Man
-
Articles about risqué topics
-
Other interesting articles and rants
-
Items for the Playa Out/In List
-
Playa Lingo
-
Comics and photographs
-
Infographics about Burning Man or Black Rock City
Basically, we’re looking for pretty much anything you’d find in any other city’s alternative newsweekly, except that it MUST pertain to Black Rock City. However…
-
No poetry!
-
No puff pieces about one specific Theme Camp, art piece, or project. Shameless name-drops are fine, but we don’t want to devote column inches to any one specific thing out there.
Deadline for submissions is Sunday, August 14.
Email BRC Weekly to submit or for more information.”

Caffeine and Crews: Getting Your Buzz on at the Center Camp Café
This is the kickoff post in a series written by members of the Operations teams that run the public infrastructure of Black Rock City. Kez writes:
"Since 1994, every Burner — old school and new breed alike — has passed through the Café at some point.
To some, it’s their touchstone for the entire event, while others just stagger in for their morning caffeine fix. It is your meeting spot, your acculturation hub and your quick respite from the sun.
To me, it is where I spend most of my time on playa — where I work and live."

A Brief History (and Future) of Leaving No Trace
Continuing our blog series on sustainability efforts in Black Rock City, Sybil Hatch writes:
“Which of Burning Man’s 10 Principles is the most important? Hmm. Without Radical Inclusion, would we feel welcome? Without Radical Self-expression, would the art suck?
Without Leaving No Trace, would there be an event at all? Nope. The Black Rock Desert land owner (that would be the United States) requires that we leave no trace. If we leave a trace, we don’t get invited back to play. By power of reasoning, we could argue that Leaving No Trace is the one principle that is absolutely mandatory.”

Theme Camp Surprise on the Pacific Crest Trail
Jeremy writes:
"For the past two Memorial Days, our Theme Camp, OKNOTOK, has set up a chunk of our BRC structure along the Pacific Crest Trail near the northern edge of the Antelope Valley. There aren't many situations where building a structure on public land is a welcome surprise, but this is one of them. It's great to have found another use for the expertise and materials we've accumulated through our participation in BRC."

Does Your Camp Do Awesome in Sustainability?
VaJazzle writes:
"What awesome are you doing around your camp's sustainability? Yeah?! Well, put 'er right here, so we can *kablammmm* blast it out to others.
We're curating camp best practices around energy, transportation, and sustainability so we can mitigate our impact on playa (create less frikkin' waste).
So, share and do the impossible: create an even better Burning Man."

Did You Know You Can Get Legally Married at Burning Man?
Armadillo Puttanesca writes:
"Why, yes you can! Having a legal wedding at Burning Man does take a little bit of planning. Black Rock City is not like Reno or Las Vegas; don't expect to be able to have a spontaneous legal wedding on the playa. The Department of Wedding Planning has volunteer officiants available to make it all legal, or you can find out how to have a friend get authorization to officiate at your wedding.
Contact the Burning Man Wedding Coordinator for more information."

Last Call for Names: 2015-16 Remembrance Plaque of Burners Lost
Retro writes:
"Deadline: July 20!
Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences.
This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year's Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, using this form. (Please DO NOT hit reply to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20 to be included on this year's plaque. Submissions after 7/20 will be added to next year's plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Man Base, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants.)
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!"

Radical Inclusion by Radical Accessibility
Mobility Camp provides resources and fun community for Burners who use wheelchairs. REdOX writes:
"For many years, nothing during Burning Man was accessible. We are slowly changing that. Most Burners would never exclude someone intentionally, they just never think that someone in a chair would be there! We teach camps, artists and interested Burners how to be more inclusive by being more accessible!"

I Tamburisti di FIREnze: Help Our Guild Gift Drums on the Playa
Indiana Bonez writes:
"We’re recreating a 16th-century drum-crafting guild in the Piazza where you’ll be sent out on a Rhythm Quest as you RANK UP from recruit to master. Tour our space, learn your Rhythmic Identity Code by interacting with our Leonardo-inspired mechanical drum, participate in our performance or maintenance workshops, help us assemble drums to donate to kids after the burn, OR build a small drum to prove worthy of your rank!
This project is partially funded by Burning Man and our incredible team of rhythmic architects [informally] known as Camp ThumpThump. We only need about $1500 to meet our fundraising goal, and we're entirely tapped out. We need YOUR help to make it happen! If not you, who?"
