GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Welcome to August! Wut. Yes, that's right, it is the month that Burning Man happens. So here we are again, crammin' more email into your life. There's a lot to know before you go!

BurningMon GO, that is. Paying attention now? Yeah, BurningMon GO is happening. Is it as wonderful/horrible as you already think? You'll just have to scroll on and find out. What else is new? A five-year-old's playa project is almost funded. That's pretty special, no?

This is a JRS full of traditions: Building BRC with John Curley is starting up again, the Nevada Burners Photo Shoot is in this one, the Café, the Black Rock Boutique, and the Playapops Symphony are trying to meet their needs for the year, and Comfort & Joy's Paiute Tribe Food Drive and Fundraiser is kicking off once again.

And don't forget to support the Temple.

The special Preparation Editions of the JRS are nearly spent. In case you’ve missed those or want some handy links, here are the issues thus far:

Arts & Civic Engagement: the First Seven Months

Kim Cook writes:

“When I joined Burning Man seven months ago, many people suggested that I communicate my vision or plans as the Director, Art & Civic Engagement. And while I felt the desire to be visible, available, and communicative, I also felt the weight of the honor and responsibility that came with this new role.

This post is an opportunity to share some of what has happened since my arrival: changes I’ve had the privilege of participating in; changes that result from input from artists and my team. They are a beginning.”

Building BRC: A Hot Start

It’s our favorite time of year around here: John Curley time. The first installment of the annual Building BRC series has arrived. John writes:

"What a difference a year makes. What happened to the greens and purples and yellows along the roads and in the fields? Now there is mostly dirt brown and dead-grass gold, and there’s nothing charming or intriguing about it. There’s danger afoot, and it’s moving just as fast as you are. We’re told every year that the desert is trying to kill us, but some years, like this one, it’s easier to believe.

Nothing seems welcoming, even as you come into town. The heat is in triple digits, and main street is empty. There are no cars on the road, just a few parked next to the hot concrete walls of Bruno’s. There’s no shade, and no birds sing.

Why the hell do we keep coming back to this godforsaken place?"

Europe’s 13th Nowhere Takes Big Steps Into the Future

Misa writes:

"Nowhere is a lot of hard work in extreme conditions with a tough team and loving community coming from around the world.

If you want to experience the definition of ‘international’, look at Nowhere: more than 27 languages are spoken there and there is no one language in the majority. Its core team works across many borders, continents and seven time zones."

What I Gave As Playa Gifts at My First Burn

Anselm writes:

"The point of Gifting is not to lug physical goods out to a dry lake bed somewhere north of Reno. The point of Gifting is to manifest an economy built on the flow of goodwill and circulation of necessary items. It was clear that simply bringing things in order to give them away would miss the mark a bit. Instead, I had to figure out how to contribute to a gifting economy in a way that kept those juices flowing without bogging me — or anyone else — down. I wanted to stimulate the economy, as it was, in a way that actually helped improve this strange culture I was about to join.

So what did I bring? I figured it out eventually, but I learned some things in the process…"

Bazaar of the Bizarre, Memories from Burning Man

Alex Freeman writes:

“Hello Burners, wanted to share my memories from the 2014 Burn. Working freelance videography means I rarely have time for my personal projects, but I finally wrapped this short film together and wanted to share with the community. I was working on the Balloon Chain crew in 2014 and had my camera with me all the time, here are some of my favorite memories.”

Email speakerseries@burningman.org with questions, comments, or ideas.”

Black Rock Boutique Needs Your Fabulous Playa Wear Donations

Bad Boy writes:

"Since 1996, the Black Rock Boutique has been helping fashion-starved citizens of Black Rock City slip into something a little more questionable. The most fabulous playa-wear originates from the deep recesses of closets belonging to Burners like yourself! As you pack your clothing bags and bins, please set aside some of your ‘so last year’ playa-wear and drop it off at the pink 24-hour donation bin at our front porch, or hand it to us during business hours.

The Black Rock Boutique is centrally located at 3:45 and Inner Circle (Center Camp), and open daily 12–4 pm with special guest DJs. Volunteers welcome, especially those with alteration or on the fly sewing skills. Please cut the line and check in with the door person if you want to participate “back of house.” We couldn’t do it without your participation!

Special items we are always eager to receive in donations: animal prints, fuzzy and furry, pants, stacked boots, plus-sizes, hot pants, jackets, formal wear, bright colors and bright whites."

Bring Your Art Sacrifice to the Tomb of the Unknown Unfinished Art Project

Massive writes:

“Bring your relic or dead concept, your sketches or descriptions of performance pieces, unused camp layouts, or ideas never started — any unfinished joy, disappointment, resentment and/or love that is the creation of art for the playa to our TUUPAP. Watch it immolate in a shared purge at 1 am after the Man Burn!”

If you’d like to perform, email links or questions to Maitrii.”

Kirtan on the Playa

David Braun writes:

“Kirtan: the voices of angels lilting through the pulse of elctronica. Your devotional voice merged with others. Sacred Song Teahouse is calling all Kirtan musicians and Singers to bring your instruments and join us in Anahasna Village for all-night Kirtan. We provide the sumptuous venue and the sound stage, you provide your intention and your heart as you give your gift. We can even provide secure storage for your instruments. The desert is magic when we meet profoundly at our heart song.”

Playapops Symphony Seeks Players

Pigtails writes:

"Love Stravinsky, Handel or Mozart? The Playapops Symphony offerers a reprieve from the raucous with listener-friendly orchestral programs across the desert scape. The Symphony is looking for strings, woodwinds, and now — for its third ‘Season’ — brass and percussion players.

Want to get involved, play, or just want more information? Visit our website."

“Hey All!

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project?

So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding. There are plenty of projects in need of assistance. Here's how to find them:

Contribute to the Temple

The Temple holds the soul of Black Rock City. Support David Best and the Temple Crew as they build it.

Support the Temple today

The best way to support the Temple now is through our Fiscal Sponsorship program. To learn more about how this program empowers you to support Burners worldwide, check out this post.

Zendo Project: Psychedelic Harm Reduction in Black Rock City

We're delighted to share the Zendo Project's important work with you again this year. Sara writes:

"The Zendo Project needs your help to fund its biggest year yet. For four years, Zendo’s mostly volunteer order of trained caretakers has been holding down a 24/7 safe space in Black Rock City for people to recover and be helped through overwhelming experiences, substance-related or otherwise. This year, the Zendo will be located more conveniently than ever, with two locations on D near the 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock keyholes (next to Rangers and Medical). Precise location information will be available in the WhatWhereWhen guide and Community Care handout in the Greeter Packs.

To lovingly provide this essential service to Black Rock City, the Zendo Project needs to raise $90,000. You can help!"

Comfort & Joy's Paiute Tribe Food Drive and Fundraiser

Biscuits writes:

"Comfort & Joy is once again hosting our Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Food Drive and Fundraiser and we need your help and support! Thanks to your support, last year was our most successful effort by far. We delivered more food than any prior year into the Paiute community at the end of the Burn, and we raised enough money for the Paiute Tribal Community Food Bank to purchase a much needed new commercial freezer. Please support our efforts again this year and help us make a real and meaningful impact in the lives of the local Paiute community.

We will be holding our annual on-playa food drive at the Comfort & Joy village @ 8 o’clock and Florin–September 4th–5th. Please bring your unopened non-perishables (fresh fruits and vegetables are welcome) for package and delivery to drop-off locations in Nixon, NV. Or if you’re able to do so, please deliver food donations directly in Nixon or Wadsworth to the taco stands displaying Comfort & Joy’s pink and orange flags. This is helpful to us because we have limited space and volunteers.

Please visit, join and share our Facebook event page. The more awareness we receive, the more good we can do!

The Northern Paiute people have been in the Black Rock region for over 1000 years. They have welcomed the Burning Man community onto their ancestral land for more than two decades now. They are also a community in need, often with few options. Let’s please come together to thank them and to demonstrate that Burners are the kind of people who give of themselves and ask nothing in return."

Jedi Dog Temple: A Five-Year-Old Burner's Project

LadyMerv writes:

“With your help we will achieve a temple/playhouse for kids designed by a kid and built with the help of kids-at-heart. This projects hopes to open the eyes of children everywhere that it is possible to dream big and have your dreams come true.”

Baby Grandpa writes:

“The Adventure Vending Machine is an honorarium art piece that will send participants on fun adventures all over Black Rock City. In return for their heroism, they can receive a special token that will unlock a special gift for them made by another Burner. Please help us reach our financial goals so we can bring the best machine possible to the Man base this year!”

EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS

BurningMon GO

Eric & Jacki write:

“Are you addicted to catching ’mon, but want to avoid being lambasted by people for having your cell phone out on the playa?

Eric & Jacki (7:15 & E) will be gluing 140 tiny BurningMon figurines at various places around the playa where appropriate. Folks can note the figurine # and location or snap a photo if you have a camera (KEEP YOUR DIRTY CELL PHONES OUT OF OUR GAME) and either stop by our camp or email ericlake@me.com after the Burn for a prize (it’s our delicious lazer sauce).”

Walk of the Wings: Temple Burn Dawn and Midnight

Orange Mike writes:

"We invite participants — especially folks wearing wings — to gather at the Temple on the Sunday of Temple Burn in the hour before dawn (around 5:30–6 AM, Sept. 4), to circle the Temple in solemn procession as the sun rises around 6:30 am. After ~15–20 minutes of procession, we will hold hands once all together, followed by any additional participation with the Temple you choose. Afterwards we will scatter to share the spirit and purpose of this year’s Temple.

In perihelion to this event, winged folk will gather again for a night-time circling of the Temple, at midnight after the Temple Burn, around the ashes.

Note: Temple Guardians enthusiastically anticipate this gathering, and only ask that we be prepared for them to begin the soft-close of the Temple around dawn on Sunday, followed by the firm closure by 8 am. Parking bikes >500’ away from the Temple is requested if you want to stay in the area past 8 am."
