ROUND-UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS:
|
GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!
|

We made it again, people. It's time to pack! There's just over 10 days until the gate opens. Can you believe that?
So yeah, consequently, this JRS is really long, and there's gonna be another one in less than a week. And that's in addition to the Law Enforcement Edition, which should probably be of interest. The next (and last!) general JRS will be full of boots-on-the-ground Building BRC stuff to get you psychosomatically smelling that playa dust. This one is full of, like, everything else.
Most notably to these Jackrabbits, this issue contains mind-blowing long-form Burning Man audio stories in podcast form, which ought to help with any long drives you might have coming up. There's also plenty of reading to get you in the mood, as well as jobs! Plus there are a bunch of fun playa events and some chances to support some of this year's biggest and baddest art projects.
The special Preparation Editions of the JRS are all done save one. Here are the links to the rest:
The Man burns in 18 days.

Burner Express Air Adds More Flights at Popular Times
Interest in Burner Express Air has been so high that we’re adding additional flights on larger aircraft during the most popular arrival and departure times, including more service during Exodus Sunday and Monday to the Bay Area and Burbank. If you checked once and your favorite travel day and time was sold out, you might want to take another look. Bay Area folks: best availability is to and from Oakland.
Offering flights from Reno, the Bay Area, Burbank and beyond, Burner Express Air helps you avoid long waits at Gate, reduces the traffic load on Highway 447 and promotes alternative transportation options to the event.
Remember also that we are managing traffic this year (see above about roads) and so be prepared that arrival times can get booked out, like any train or bus or plane, and you may need to be flexible.
For more information and to book flights, visit the Travel by Air section of the Burner Express Air website.

Burning Man Seeks Expert in Supporting Volunteer Efforts
Ashlan Holland writes:
"Burning Man seeks a consultant with experience analyzing, evaluating and planning volunteer support systems and operations. As we grow into our nonprofit status, and our mission evolves beyond the boundaries of Black Rock City, we need expert advice to help us strengthen and support our culture of volunteerism.
Candidates should have extensive experience with large volunteer-driven organizations, and skills to design infrastructure to support our growing global culture.
The scope of work includes developing recommendations to support volunteer leaders, streamline processes, and refine our intake system for new volunteers. This work is important and long overdue.
The deliverables will include a gap analysis of current volunteer tools and programs, a strategy document, and a report summarizing strategic recommendations. Read about the project, criteria and submission instructions in our RFP.
Chief Transition Officer Harley K. Dubois will manage the search and selection process, alongside other leaders and stakeholders.
You’re welcome to share this with anyone you feel is qualified for this position.
Proposal deadline is November 1. We will select candidates starting December 1, and work will start in January 2017.
Send electronic proposals to RFP@burningman.org."

Support Our Local Towns
There are a number of small towns dotted around the Black Rock Desert, and thousands of Burners make their way through them every year en route to and from Burning Man. We ask that Burners please pay all these towns the utmost respect on your way through.
They are our year-round neighbors in the high desert, and we appreciate them for always being so welcoming as we invade their Nevada backyard every year. When patronizing any local businesses, please be respectful and courteous, and Leave No Trace.
You’ll find more info about our neighboring towns on our website.

What Would Water Say? A Burning Man Project Donor’s Story
Ping Fu writes:
"When our first dust storm hit, we found a shelter in an Irish bar. I asked the guy if I could have some water, and he said, ‘Ma’am, this is an Irish bar.’ Everybody laughed. So I had a beer instead, and I actually don’t drink! But when you’re thirsty, you don’t care.
While we were out there, I had an opportunity to go to Fly Ranch, a nearby oasis centered on this amazing geyser. When I got in the water there, it felt so nourishing and important. I thought about how nature supports us. It’s a gift."

What We’ve Learned about Art, Money, and the Renaissance: Series Conclusion
Caveat brings it all home:
“We may never be able to make “artist” a stable, reliable, safe job. The artists themselves may not allow it — and it’s that spirit that makes them so crucial to communities everywhere. But we can create communities in which their value is recognized, and support the sacrifices they make. We can stop taking advantage of their eagerness to make sacrifices on behalf of our communities, and instead celebrate it in meaningful ways. We are confident that they will take any stability we can give them, and turn it into risks worth taking.”

BMIR Reminds You to Bring an FM Radio to the Playa
Kanizzle writes:
"BMIR, 94.5 FM will be broadcasting 24/7 from the playa starting sometime on Wednesday, August 24. BMIR is Burning Man’s official radio station, your source for news, music, official Burn information, interviews, weather, Exodus information and general madness. We are YOUR community radio station and have an open door policy. Come on by and share your story, poem, rant, song or whatever with the citizens of our fair city.
You can tune in on your computer or phone while you’re doing that last minute packing to hear how the city is coming together and get any late-breaking info. Many Burners stream BMIR on their phones while they travel to the playa. Here’s how to listen on your computer or phone.
Stop by the station and say hello! BMIR is open 24/7 and located in Center Camp at 5:45 and Esplanade, right between Ranger HQ and Earth Guardians. Our Production Office will be open everyday from 12 noon to 4:00 pm for you to record an announcement promoting your events.
We’ll see you in the desert. Remember to bring a radio!"

New Volunteer Opportunities with Man Watch Crew
EZ Button writes:
“Man Watch is a group of volunteers from other crews at Burning Man who dedicate some time to protect the Man and enhance the experience of all who come to see it. Man Watch volunteers are stationed at the Man Pavilion around the clock starting on Sunday until early Saturday before the burn.
They are promoters, guardians, and information givers who enjoy talking to attendees about each year’s Man Pavilion and Burning Man in general. Man Watch volunteers also act as docents, facilitating interactive experiences associated with the Man.
Starting this year, Man Watch will be an independent crew open to participants looking to help on the playa. We are looking for volunteers who would like to help build and sustain the new Man Watch crew. If you’re interested, please contact EZ Button at manwatch@burningman.org.”

The Science of Playa Transformation
Daniel Yudkin writes:
"Scientists at Oxford University and UCLA are studying the psychology of Burning Man. They need your help! This short questionnaire will give them insight into why people go to Burning Man and how it changes them. They want to hear from virgins, veterans, and the Burn-curious (even if you haven’t scored a ticket this year).
Find them near Census at Center Camp to learn more about this project and participate in other studies. Look out for the sign that says ‘PLAY GAMES FOR SCIENCE!’"

Adopting the Playa Free Box
Sizzle writes:
"We created this fun (pink, purple and green) free-standing shelving unit, built with reclaimed/scrap lumber, with cubbies housing different kinds of items that playa residents might want or need: shoes, hats, water bottles, goggles, jackets, pants, tops, mugs. Each cubby label defined the contents so ‘shoppers’ could easily access fun stuff. We brought the Playa Free Box and set it up in Center Camp for four years. Burners loved it and even started gifting items back each year.
Unfortunately, Burning Man changed the format for Center Camp and elected not to house it for 2015, so now we have this fun art installation that could be used to give costume items away, but no place to have it on display (We are just two people, not affiliated with a big Theme Camp). We are hoping that a camp that already gifts clothing items might adopt it so that it can live on at Burning Man."

Honorarium Project FLOCONS Needs Your Help With Transportation
Lucy Charon writes:
“FLOCONS is a dynamic and evolving series of large-scale ornament-like sculptures, imagined and built by a collective of artists. The project received art grants for exhibition at Critical Northwest in June, the Oregon Country Fair in July, and Burning Man in August. While we always intended to run an online fundraiser for help with transportation costs to Black Rock City, we did not foresee our rental truck for Critical/OCF being the victim of a hit and run, leaving us with a huge out-of-pocket deductible. We have completed 10 FLOCONS and need your help to get them all to Black Rock City!”
